Why Leading With a Global Mindset Is No Longer Optional

When I Talk About “Cultural Competence,” Here’s What I Really Mean

When I talk about cultural competence, I’m not talking about a buzzword or a check-the-box training. I’m talking about a core skill: the ability to understand, communicate, and effectively interact with people across cultures. You might also hear it called Cultural Intelligence, Cultural Fluency, or Cultural Quotient (CQ). Whatever the label, the heart of it is the same.

For me, cultural competence includes three things: being aware of my own worldview and assumptions; developing a genuinely positive attitude toward cultural differences; and gaining real knowledge of different cultural practices and perspectives.

When we do this well, something powerful happens. Cultural competence stops being “nice to have” and starts driving results. It impacts your bottom line, boosts employee engagement, and elevates customer service. It helps your teams show up with the confidence and sensitivity to serve all customers well—and it allows people from various backgrounds to feel seen, understood, and appreciated.

Why This Is a Business Imperative

One of my favorite reminders came from a friend who said to me, “Cultural competency is not a soft skill, it is a must skill.” I couldn’t agree more. We’re operating in an increasingly dynamic, global world. If your team can’t navigate cultural nuance, you will eventually feel it—in lost sales, strained relationships, or missed opportunities.

The beauty is that these skills are transferable. Whether your CEO is Japanese or your neighbor is Japanese, the cultural understanding you build in business will serve you in your personal life as well. Cultural competence doesn’t switch off at 5 p.m.—it shapes how you connect, lead, and live.
